ADA Compliance Doors

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), business doors must meet ADA standards for accessibility. These rules assist people with disabilities in easily accessing and navigating your business. Such doors benefit individuals in wheelchairs and those with various handicaps or disabilities. For instance, round doorknobs are not ADA-compliant because they are difficult for those with arthritis and other wrist and hand disabilities to turn.

ADA door rules can be more complex than you think. Commercial buildings must follow ADA codes, so ensuring your entryways are ADA-compliant is important.

Our design team at UFold is here to help you understand ADA door hardware guidelines and select doors and hardware that meet ADA standards.

What is The ADA Requirements For Doors

Window Height

According to ADA guidelines, the minimum reach height for an operable window handle must be between 15 and 48 inches from the finished floor.

Accessibility

There should be enough space on both sides of the door for mobility devices.

Beveled

A maximum height of 3/4 inches is allowed for existing or modified thresholds if they have a beveled edge on each side with a slope not steeper than 1:2.

Hardware of doors and gates

Door hardware must allow one-handed operation, require no tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist, operate with a maximum of 5 lbf, and be located between 34” and 48” above the ground.

Thresholds

Threshold height is limited to 1/2 inch in new constructions. The edge must be beveled to a maximum of 1:2 for heights over 1/4 inch.

Closing Speed

Closing speed must not exceed five seconds, with a closing distance from 90° to 12° from the latch. It should ensure latching without slamming.

Door Width

The minimum width for an accessible door is 32 inches, measured between the door face and the stop when open to 90 degrees.

Opening Force

The door should be easy to open with a force of not more than 5 pounds and without twisting the wrist.

Advantages of ADA Compliance Doors

  • These doors help people with disabilities to access buildings, malls, and other doorways easily.
  • One important feature of ADA-compliant doors is their slow closing speed, which reduces the risk of accidents or injuries.
  • ADA doors also help businesses showcase their commitment to inclusivity. They show that the business has prioritized inclusivity and equal access for all customers.
  • These doors help businesses to welcome a range of customers, including those with disabilities.
  • By providing accessible entryways, businesses can welcome a broader range of customers, including those with disabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public accommodations and commercial facilities to be accessible to people with disabilities. This includes requirements for door widths, opening force, hardware, and thresholds. ADA compliant doors allow people in wheelchairs or with other mobility limitations to independently enter and exit buildings. Adhering to ADA guidelines for doors is necessary for new construction and renovations to ensure accessibility and inclusivity as well as comply with federal law.

The key aspects that makes a door closer ADA compliant are having adjustable closing speed, complying with maximum opening force requirements, and providing a sufficiently slow sweep period so the door does not slam on the user. ADA compliant door closers ensure accessibility for those with mobility limitations. Here is a summary of what makes a door closer ADA compliant:

  • Sweep period of at least 3 seconds from an open position of 70 degrees to a point 3 inches from the latch
  • Opening force of no more than 5 lbs for exterior doors and 5 lbs for interior doors
  • Closing speed must be adjustable
  • Complies with ANSI grade 1 requirements for closing force
  • Meets standards for opening force, closing speed, latch speed, and backcheck positioning
  • Has minimal opening resistance and smooth operation
  • Allows people with disabilities to fully open the door and pass through unimpeded

No, not all doors are required to be ADA compliant. Here’s a quick summary of which doors need to meet ADA standards:

  • Doors that are part of an accessible route in public spaces and commercial buildings – this includes entrances, exits, and doors connecting different spaces.
  • Doors that are part of an accessible unit in hotels, office buildings, transportation centers, etc.
  • Doors that are part of an accessible patient room in medical care facilities.
  • Doors that are part of accessible common use spaces in employee work areas.
  • Doors that are part of accessible transient lodging guest rooms.

Doors not required to be accessible include doors to utility closets, private offices, warehouse storage spaces, mechanical rooms, and other spaces not intended for general public use. New construction of public accommodations and commercial facilities must have ADA compliant doors installed. Existing facilities only need to retrofit doors if planned alterations affect the usability of the door/space.

The ADA requires a minimum clear opening width of 32 inches for single doors to allow passage of wheelchairs. Openings deeper than 24 inches must have 36 inches of forward clearance space. Doors need proper maneuvering clearance on each side and thresholds no higher than 1/4 inch for accessibility.

ADA doors must stay open at least 3 seconds from 70 degrees to 3 inches from the latch. Slow closing speed gives disabled users time to pass through without the door closing too quickly.
